What it does
Switch games at the top, then just hold a card up to the camera -- no box to line it up in. Every frame is scanned for a card-shaped region wherever it is, perspective-corrected flat, then identified in roughly a tenth of a second. Riftbound covers all 689 cards released so far; Magic covers every English, physical printing (~105,000 cards, not deduplicated by artwork, so different sets and collector numbers of the same illustration are still told apart). Matching runs in three stages -- locate the card, a fast approximate pre-filter narrows the full pool to a short list, then precise local feature matching (ORB, the same technique behind most production card scanner apps) picks the winner -- entirely in your browser via WebAssembly on a background thread so the camera preview never freezes mid-scan.
Why it is mostly private
Recognition itself never leaves your device -- no camera frame or image is ever uploaded anywhere, it's all matched locally against a card index downloaded once and cached in your browser from then on. The only thing that leaves your browser is the small JSON record of a card you explicitly tap "Add to collection" on, and only if you've configured a webhook URL yourself. No webhook, no network traffic, ever.
Tips
No need to line the card up in a box -- it's detected wherever it is in frame, and the dashed outline follows it live once found. Good even lighting and a steady hand help far more than resolution; glare across foil or a plastic sleeve is the most common cause of a missed match. Magic's index (every English printing, ~105,000 cards) is a much bigger one-time download than Riftbound's -- give it a minute on first load; it's cached after that and switching back is instant. The one case the scanner genuinely can't resolve is two printings that are pixel-identical (mainly foil vs. non-foil of the exact same print) -- different sets and collector numbers are distinguished normally.
